Signed and numbered edition of 20, 2009
Image Size:21 1/2 X 19 1/4 inches
Sheet Size: 28 3/4 X 25 1/4 inches
Brand X Projects, Inc is pleased to present LUKE AND FLOWERS, a photogravure by renowned American artist Stone Roberts. Inspired by a painting of the same title, the photogravure captures the artist's wonderful range of compositional mastery and tonal variation. Soft contrasts between dark and light are exemplified in this superbly composed and witty edition.
LUKE AND FLOWERS features Roberts' long time English Cocker Spaniel who became a regular part of Stone's work. Having accompanied Roberts to the studio regularly, Luke was often a reluctant model. However, in this composition, Luke poses gracefully as the canine version of a classical sculpture. Lapping gently from a saucer, Luke is unconcerned by the ensuing chaos! This entrancing photogravure reveals Roberts’ artistic mastery of capturing the moment perfectly.
Stone trained at Yale, The Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and Rome. His work is collected by numerous public and private collections including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chase Bank Collection and The Biltmore Estate in Ashville.

STONE ROBERTS
Undoubtedly one of the foremost
figurative artists working today, Roberts is included in numerous private
and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York; Chase Manhattan Bank, New York; Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, Michigan;
and the Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina. He has returned to
his first love of drawing-this time on copperplate, and the results are truly
magical.
Trained at Yale, Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, and in Rome, Roberts
creates work steeped in the traditions of art history, but with a look and
an edge that are unmistakably contemporary. These qualities are on view
in this new series of prints. By definition, etchings have both a sensual
and sensitive quality, and these images do not disappoint.
The three luminous works have the subtle elegance of the masters of
printmaking, from Dürer to Matisse. Each one is an intimate glimpse that
forces us to look, think, and feel a bit more intensely.
A Cluster of Grapes in Folded Napkin is a master etching with tonal depth and
rich burr. Huddled Pears is subtly complex with hand coloring in watercolor
Figure Study (from Interior: Evening) is an exquisite etching on chine collé in
which the artist explores a pose with the figure of his wife from a larger
composition painted in 1998.
